AD | PR sample*. Anyone else find their fridge during lockdown has mainly been stocked up with alcohol and mixers to make cocktails? Come on, mine can’t be the only one… I’ve also noticed that clothes are sitting slightly tighter around the waste. If you like me don’t want to give up alcohol completely, look for options with less calories but still with a great taste. Enter Twelve Below.
Twelve Below is a tonic water brand that sell flavoured tonic water using organic agave which is a type of cactus from Mexico. A pack of four bottles come with four different flavours. The Classic, Rhubarb & Ginger, Pear & Cardamom and Apple & Garden Mint. Because they’re all naturally sweetened with a dash of agave each 100 ml only contains 12 calories. It’s great if you want to enjoy an alcoholic beverage and not feeling too guilty.
When people say to me that they don’t like gin and tonic, I feel bad for them. It’s a great drink. But, I also believe it’s not the gin they don’t like, it’s the tonic. There are some horrible tonics out there. Looking at you Schweppes but also plenty of nice ones. I’m happy to say that Twelve Below belongs to the delicious category of tonic water. I have used them in different cocktails but I also tried the flavoured ones on their own. They’re very flavoursome. I think without looking at the bottle, you’d be able to say what flavours they are by tasting them. The Rhubarb & Gingers has a kick to it, the Pear & Cardamom has a round aftertaste to it and the Apple & Garden Mint is cool and refreshing.
When I think tonic water, I immediately think gin and tonic but you can mix tonic with so many other spirits as well and and make delicious cocktails. I tried three different variations using the flavoured tonic water from Twelve Below.
Pear & Cardamom Gin and Tonic
40ml classic gin
160ml Pear & Cardamom Twelve Below tonic water
I had to mix this tonic water with a gin. I didn’t want to compromise the lovely flavours from the pear and cardamom so I mixed it with Edinburgh Gin’s classic gin. It’s almost like drinking a melted ‘Piggelin’ (pear flavoured ice lolly) on a hot summers day. Very refreshing and comforting. I think it’s from my childhood summer memories with a cool pear ice lolly in hand.
Rhubarb & Ginger Spiced Rum
40ml spiced rum
160ml Rhubarb & Ginger Twelve Below tonic water
I find that ginger is a great complement to spiced rum. I’m sure you’ve enjoyed a rum mixed with ginger beer before. Therefor I thought this tonic would work well with a spiced rum and I was right. It has a warm taste with a little kick. The rhubarb gives it a British taste and spin on this otherwise tropical drink.
Apple & Garden Mint Spritz
60ml apple cordial
50ml Apple & Garden Mint Twelve Below tonic water
Who doesn’t love a spritz? If you ever get tired of an Aperol Spritz (you’d never) or want to try something different, I can recommend this cool and refreshing cocktail. The apple cordial enhances the apple taste in the tonic and the mint complements well by giving it a cool taste. The prosecco and tonic brings the sparkle to the spritz cocktail.
